Affordable prestige: luxury vinyl plank and tile

Prestige doesn’t always come at a cost, and it’s not always high-maintenance. Luxury vinyl flooring proves that being true-to-life hardwood, tile, and stone mimics. It’s completely waterproof, so it’s the perfect alternative if you want the look of wood in a room but can’t have it.

Wood floors are trending right now, but they can be damaged by water, so they’re not recommended for installation in baths or other wet spaces. Alternatively, sometimes you love the tile look but need a floor with more softness, cushion, and bounce. Both follow all industry trends, so your floors can be affordably modern, stylish, and functional.

Luxury vinyl flooring

This flooring is an excellent simulation of wood, stone, or tile, and it comes in an almost unlimited number of colors, patterns, and designs. The images are vibrant and multi-dimensional, being taken with digital photography and embossing. You will see every knot, wormhole, raised grain, and veining/color variation, with textured appearances such as wire-brushed, hand scraped, weathered, or distressed. The floors are finished with a matte, gloss, or high gloss colors.

Thanks to technology, it can be cut into a plank (vinyl plank flooring) or a tile (LVT flooring). Many feel the extra seams add to the realism, and the planks, meant to imitate hardwood boards, consist of vinyl cut into strips then mounted. Some take the tile pieces one step further by adding grout.

Make sure you select authentic luxury vinyl

To find the very best and long-lasting product, make sure it is at least 8-mm or 9-mm thick. There should be a thick wear layer, the top, melamine coated surface that protects the floors from scratches and scuffs. The wear layer is measured in mils; yours should be 20-mils or more. Good quality flooring, when properly taken care of, can last almost 20 years.

This vinyl is also easy to take care of with a daily sweeping and periodic mopping. Avoid wax, shine promoting cleaners, as they can harm the top coating and create dullness. To be safe, only use a manufacturer-approved cleaner.

Installation is the fast and uncomplicated floating floor. The pieces click together similar to a tongue and groove or pizzle. They form a mat that hovers over the subfloor. Subfloors only need to be clean, dry, and level, but the installer will sometimes sand it down. Otherwise, imperfections can telegraph to the surface floor.
